We may still be counting down the days until Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrives in cinemas this December but exciting new details are already emerging surrounding the upcoming standalone movie from director Gareth Edwards. The epic sci-fi franchise has now cast the hottest name in town, Felicity Jones as its female lead in the hyped Star Wars spinoff due out next year.

The actress, who is currently nominated for a Best Actress Oscar for her breathtaking performance as the wife of Steven Hawking in The Theory of Everything, has become the name on everyone’s lips so it’s no wonder she’ll take on the almighty task of fronting one of the most cherished series of all time. The British-born beauty beat off tough competition from Girl With The Dragon Tattoo actress Rooney Mara and Parks and Recreation star Tatiana Maslany to land the role destined to make her one of the biggest names in Hollywood. We guess an Oscar nod will inevitably tip it.

Gareth Edwards, who last smashed the box office with 2014’s Godzilla will direct the 3D picture while Chris Weitz replaces Gary Whitta to pen the screenplay. Little is known surrounding the spinoff’s plot but we do have an expected release date of December 16, 2016 – in the US.
