David Thewlis is taking the title role in the new TV adaptation of JB Priestley's classic play An Inspector Calls.

The Harry Potter star, who played Remus Lupin in the hit films and made his name with a stand-out performance in Mike Leigh's Naked, said he was "thrilled" to be taking part.

The cast for the BBC One show also includes Ken Stott and Miranda Richardson as Arthur and Sybil Birling, who receive a visit from the mysterious Inspector Goole who holds them to account for the death of a young woman.

It is part of a series of adaptations of classics of 20th century literature that also includes a version of Laurie Lee's Cider With Rosie.
